We Are All Tired of Bad News!

This has been a tough year for many of us. I try send out an update to former/pending guests (and those who tried to be guests) each December. Usually I speak to Cayman-specific issues like water, power, road improvements; new restaurants, etc. This year things are a little different!

This year--financial crises, fuel prices, wildfires in California and general economic contraction in the USA have taken center stage. You only have just so many vacations each year and we want to keep Grand Cayman as an option. I wanted to take a moment to assure you that Grand Cayman is still doing well as an international destination. We have had very few (economy/job related) cancellations; and every single oceanfront villa and upper end condo on 7MB is rented for the New Years Week. A break from reading newspapers and watching the news will be welcome. The island is in great shape and the weather today was partly sunny and 82° F ( heat index of 92°). The water temperature is still 80°.

Airline flights to other islands have recently been scaled back-- but airline flights to Grand Cayman have been recently expanded. Cayman Airways now flies from Washington D.C. (Dulles) and New York (JFK) direct; as well as from Chicago. US Airways has 2 flights from Charlotte and one from Philadelphia on Saturdays. What we are hearing is that the "safety", general cleanliness, pure water, great roads, low crime rate and friendly people of Grand Cayman are attracting more visitors than other Caribbean islands. We are also one of the most accessible. You can leave the East Coast at 9:30AM and have your toes in the sand 5 hours later. Over 50% of cruise ship passengers say that their favorite island was Grand Cayman and that they plan to visit there in the future. Year-over-year airport arrivals are up 10% in Grand Cayman.

Some goods news with respect to renting villas--- Each villa is owned by an individual owner; it seems with the economic woes; the owners are more flexible on changeover days, additional services, amenities and sometimes rates! GCV&C is an agent for most of these homes-- and our job is to try to put your family in the right villa for an agreed-upon rate. Some villas are steadfast, but others are not. If you are considering returning to Cayman; please let us know how we can help.

If you are considering coming December 20-27 for the Christmas Week-- I still have 2-3 very nice villas and oceanfront condos at the Meridian (including their Penthouse #34)-- we may be able to waive the holiday surcharge as well.

Water Authority Made Big Advances in 2008

One of the "headaches" of island living used to be the lack of underground pure water--piped directly to the villas. Like Bermuda and most of the Caribbean islands-- Grand Cayman had to rely on rainwater collected in cisterns under the house or water delivered by truck. If the power went out, the pump ceased to work and no water! When the power came back on--the pump would need to be primed (crawl under the house?). This is all becoming a thing of the past, as the Water Authority is now pumping pure, desalinated water all around the island. There is a 4MM gallon storage and pumping facility on Frank Sound Road; and water has been piped to almost all homes in Cayman Kai. All of the Northside, South Coast & East End homes have it now. So welcome back to Cayman and don't worry about running out of water again! Most homes don't even use a water cooler anymore--as the water in the pipes is the same water they bottle anyway!

Rum Point Restaurant Reopens December 5th!

The Rum Point Restaurant has been closed for public dining since Hurricane IVAN in September 2004.  While the restaurant itself was not too badly damaged, the restaurant was on lease to the 7MB Hyatt Hotel that was severely damaged and is still embroiled in litigation over its insurance claims. The (local) owners of the Rum Point Club terminated the contract with Hyatt last winter and began renovations of the restaurant and Rum Point Facilities.  The manager of the restaurant (Carol Boulton) expects the restaurant to reopen fro Friday and Saturday evenings. The schedule of services will expand with demand. It is anticipated that the holiday season will see plenty of business from villa guests, and the return of the winter residents will again be a staple of business for regular meals at the Rum Point Restaurant. Reservations can be made by calling Carol at 345-947-9412.

-We Accept Payment Online Now-

We finally have caught up to the times and added a secure payment portal for Visa or MasterCard Payments for your villa. We had to switch processors in order to do it--but it is better this way. Only you see your card data and an e-mailed receipt is sent to both of us immediately. It was too awkward and unsecure to fax/e-mail credit card data. I also don't like to keep your data in my office as well. As the victim of credit card fraud myself--I appreciate the privacy.

Cayman Shoppers Exceeds Expectations

cvsEddie Ebanks of www.caymanshoppers.com has done a great job in his first two years of providing villa stocking services for groceries and beverages to all the villas and condos we offer for rental. Everything from baby formula to gourmet condiments is available, given enough lead time. Eddie is related by marriage to the Hurley Grocery Store family-- and can even deliver on Sunday when the stores are all closed! (including alcoholic beverages). Eddie will arrange access to the villa on arrival day, as he knows most all the managers. I have received many complimentary e-mails regarding his services and I know that when a travel-weary family finally arrives in Grand Cayman-- a fridge full of groceries and a cold beverage at hand is a great first impression for ANY villa. 345-916-2978

Barefoot Man Still Rules

The "Barefoot Man" (George Nowak) has been entertaining folks in Cayman for 25 years-- his colorful, Jimmy Buffet-like ballads are cute and catchy. He plays each Tuesday and Thursday at the Reef Resort (www.thereef.com) in the East End for a dinner show. Barefoot can be heard on SIRIUS radio channel "Margaritaville" before you go! He also does private gigs! Barefoot  knows many other local musicians who he can bring along too! Anyway--worth a visit--and his CD's are for sale all over the island. Reservations at the Reef 345-947-3100

Little known fact-- he also publishes a local (seasonal) newspaper called the "Fun Times" (click to read pdf)

New Villa/Condo Additions

GCV&C changes the lineup each year of the homes and condos offered for rent. We don't offer every licensed villa on the island or every condo. An attempt is made to offer fair value across all sectors.

We only offer those that we would stay in ourselves and have personally visited. If you don't see a property on the site that you might see elsewhere on the net-- know that we drop properties for many reasons. Sometimes it might have been sold, fallen into disrepair, might have current construction, the owner may be hard to do business with or we received complaints. It also could be that we didn't do a good job renting it for the owner. On occasion, a property may be just priced way too high for the amenities, location, beach, etc. it offers (poor value).

On the flip side-- there have been a number of super homes recently built, renovated or new to the market in 2008. Please see these properties on the website (Black we Added, Red we Dropped):

Private Snorkel & Diving Charters

While the 65’ catamarans of Red Sail Sports ( www.redsailcayman.com ) are a great (larger group) charter to the Stingray City sandbar; hiring a privately chartered nice boat with captain allows more flexibility, personal attention and privacy. If a group totals 8+ people, the total cost is only about $15-20 more per person for this level of service (than the larger catamaran @ $40/person).

GCV reviews many providers and has found that  the following services do the best job— from boat quality, reliability and service level to just making sure you have a great time. If you have a person who is slightly older, heavier or just not as agile as they used to be— these two do a great job.

Please remind them where you are staying (Northside or 7 Mile Beach) and to pick you up at either the Hyatt Canal (for 7MB guests) or the Kaibo Yacht Club (for those on the Northside). If you have rented a villa in Cayman Kai with a dock, you might also ask if they can pick you up straight behind the house. Afternoons are best, as cruise ship guests have to be returned to their ship by 4PM--so they leave the sandbar by 2PM latest.

One additional benefit of these providers is that they are both certified dive-masters as well and can provide tanks and weight for a private dive charter.  For groups of 6-8 divers, the rate is roughly equivalent to a 2 tank trip with a larger dive operation.

We recommend afternoon trips to avoid the cruise ship passengers.
